Umbrella Alley in Fishermans Wharf

Visit this interactive mural spot in Fisherman’s Wharf – a perfect Instagram-friendly backdrop for your San Francisco photos. Eleven murals and artworks are complete and more murals are getting started. The alley is always a colorful and fun work in progress.

The family-friendly murals, and even the pavement, are painted in bright colors to encourage joy, fun, and laughter. Nestled near the Buena Vista Cafe on Beach Street, Umbrella Alley is one of the coolest art-filled alleyways in San Francisco. The Hyde Street Cable Car turnaround is across the street and Ghiradelli Square is at the end of the block. 

Among many murals check out a 50’ wide California Dreaming, I Left My Heart in San Francisco hearts, and the iconic Greetings from San Francisco retro postcard murals. The alley is full of fun installations plus brightly colored balloons and umbrellas suspended throughout the entire space. Particularly popular is the Summer of Love Monarch Butterly wall mural featuring a 60’s theme 3D butterfly.

• Recommend donation to support the mural artists is $5.00 per adult and 3.00 per child (over 12) 
• Donations are accepted by Cash, Venmo alley-artists, Paypal. Apple Pay and Credit cards are accepted too.

How did Umbrella Alley get created? Umbrella Alley Rises from the Pandemic

Umbrella Alley took that inspiration and created a happy, joyful space for visitors and locals alike. It began as a few murals in a festive atmosphere and gradually expanded to include colorful umbrellas and balloons from our friends in Portugal. As months turned into years, the erratic economy affected artists more severely, and the Alley’s mission became clear: to support Bay Area artists by hiring them to create these spectacular works.

Initially designed and funded by the owner of the two sightseeing tour companies San Francisco Electric Tour Company and San Francisco Jeep Tours that are based in the Alley, Umbrella Alley now thrives thanks to visitors from around the world. 

Umbrella Alley is always evolving. Watch for new murals.
