What the Experience Actually Feels Like

Picture this: You hop into a bright green open-air Jeep. The city fades. The trees get taller. The coast opens up. You’re laughing, taking photos, wandering forest paths, and hearing stories you’d never get on a bus.

This feels less like a tour — and more like exploring with a local friend.

Where We Go (And Why You’ll Love It)

Route Out of the City (Scenic from the Start)

Your adventure starts before you even leave San Francisco. Depending on timing and traffic, the route out of the city can include a few of these favorites:

Exact routing varies by day — your guide chooses the smoothest, most scenic path out of the city.

Muir Woods — Walk Among Giant Redwoods

This is the heart of the tour.

Your guide drops you right at the entrance and handles the logistics so you can:

Walk beneath towering redwoods

Explore peaceful forest paths

Move at your pace, not a group’s

Short stroll or longer wander — your call.

Golden Gate Bridge — Cross It + Photo Stops

Yes, you actually drive across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Your guide then stops at one of the best nearby viewpoints (Fort Point, Fort Baker, or the Marin Headlands) for iconic photos — without parking stress or crowds.

Muir Beach Overlook — Pacific Views

This dramatic Pacific Ocean viewpoint is a magical surprise on every tour.

Think coastal cliffs, endless blue water, fresh sea air — and a moment where everyone just stops and says, “Wow.”

Sausalito — A Taste or More (Your Choice)

Sausalito is included as a scenic drive-through on the standard tour.

Want more time? You can extend to:

    • Wander the waterfront
    • Grab a snack or coffee
    • Take harbor photos
    • Soak up the sunshine

Just tell your guide — your route stays flexible.

How the Tour Wraps Up

You choose how to finish:

  • Return to San Francisco with your guide
  • Stay in Sausalito for dining or exploring and return by ferry to SF

On the return, your guide includes a Golden Gate Bridge overlook in the Marin Headlands — an unforgettable final photo stop.

More than just a park visit.

The redwoods were stunning — but the journey, bridge views, and stops made it unforgettable.

What trails are available in Muir Woods?

Muir Woods National Monument contains 6 miles of trails. There is a 1/2 hour loop, a 1 hour loop, and a 1 1/2 hour loop as well as longer hikes on trails that extend into surrounding Mount Tamalpais State Park.

With the Jeep Tour schedule we suggest either the 30 minute loop “Main Trail to Bridge 2 and back” or 1 hour “Main trail to Bridge 3 and back ” loop.

Please check with your tour guide to plan the perfect lenghth visit.

No, Muir Woods is an amazing self guided experience with well marked trails. The National Park Service does not allow outside guides to conduct tours inside the park.

The tour guide will stay with the Jeep and be ready to depart for the next stop on your adventure.

Bonus Items: Attend a Tree Talk: 15-minute talks and guided one-hour tours are presented when staffing permits. Check the program board at the park entrance for times. No reservations necessary.

NOTE: There is NO cell phone service or WiFi at or around Muir Woods National Monument.

What and where is Muir Woods National Monument?

Muir Woods National Monument is in Marin County, California, just a few miles north of San Francisco. The 558-acre monument preserves one of the last remaining ancient redwood forests in the Bay Area. Some of the redwoods are nearly 1,000 years old and reach heights of more than 250 feet.

Named for conservationist John Muir, it was the 10th national monument to be designated under the Antiquities Act of 1906, the first to be in proximity to a major city, and the first to consist of formerly privately-owned lands.

Today, Muir Woods National Monument is home to more than 380 different plants and animals, including 27 species of mammals, 50 species of birds, 12 species of reptiles, and 5 species of amphibians.

Redwood Creek, the principal stream in the monument, runs clean and clear beneath the towering trees. Its waters are home to Coho salmon and steelhead trout—keystone species in many Pacific ecosystems.

Muir Woods National Monument is managed by the National Park Service as a distinct park unit within Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area

Established by Congress in 1972, Golden Gate National Recreation Area is one of the largest national parks in an urban area, spanning three counties: Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo. With more than 19 million annual visitors, the park is both an international destination and a local treasure for the 7 million people who call the Bay Area home. The park includes world-renowned destinations like Alcatraz Island, Muir Woods National Monument, and the Presidio, as well as sites of regional and national importance, including the Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, Fort Mason, Ocean Beach, Fort Funston, Sweeney Ridge, and Mori Point.
